Denare Beach, Saskatchewan

The quaint little northern village of Denare Beach is a relatively new resort community. Situated along Amisk Lake (Beaver Lake in English), it wasn’t settled until 1937 when a road was built into Flin Flon. Shortly after, however, people flocked to the area for its natural beauty and Denare Beach came to be.

Today, you’ll find the village has been able to maintain the natural, wild feel of the area despite the building of new properties in the area. There are only about 800 permanent residents, but everyone is friendly and are eager to show their aboriginal and historic roots to any and all who visit there.

The History of Denare Beach, SK

Located just upriver from one of the Hudson Bay Company’s main northern post at Cumberland House, Amisk Lake and the area now known as Denare Beach played a large role in the company’s fur trade and their fight against their biggest rival the Northwest Company. Not only was it a gateway to the rest of their territory, but it was also used by the local aboriginal peoples to move and trade furs for necessary items such as guns, tools and kitchen items.

This brought with it many discoveries and important Canadians including the Flin Flon ore discovery and the arrival of Tom Creighton and Jack Hammell. If you’d like to learn more about this little village’s rich history and hear some of the local stories, be sure to visit the Denare Beach website.
